Volunteers for Medical Engineering, a small non-profit almost entirely volunteer based, invents and builds customized assistive technology for individuals with disabilities in Central Maryland. Volunteer engineers, with the help of volunteer physical/occupational therapists and nurses, develop one-of-a-kind AT that enables people with disabilities to live, work, and play more independently. We’re actually located in the DORS Workforce Technology Center –we’re in the basement near Maryland TAP!
VME is launching the second annual What I Wish for My Child campaign, through which families of children with disabilities are invited to submit a wish for their child. VEM volunteer engineers, therapists, and nurses will develop customized solutions for five winning families. Here is a link to last year’s winners: http://www.vmesolutions.org/images/stories/wiw%20approved%20list.09.pdf.
In general, volunteer nurses would likely do a home visit with a client (along with a VME engineer) to evaluate the client/the request and then act as a consultant as the engineers complete the project. VME takes requests from clients throughout the year, but in particular is looking for help with the What I Wish Campaign so volunteers would likely spend about 5-6 hours per project between April and July this year. And volunteers can choose to work on however many projects they’d like.
For more information, or to volunteer please contact Breanne Reynolds, Volunteer Coordinator for VME at breanne@vmesolutions.org or visit their website, http://www.vmesolutions.org/
